What are the differences between a machining center and a CNC milling machine?

Machining centers evolved from CNC milling machines and are essentially CNC milling machines equipped with cutting tools. Those familiar with CNC machining will certainly recognize this. By installing different tools for various purposes, machining centers can perform multiple machining operations in a single setup. Simply put, machining centers are superior to CNC milling machines in that they can automatically change tools.

This method of differentiation is not inherently wrong. However, it's not entirely rigorous. The difference between machining centers and CNC milling machines also lies in the standards they adhere to.

Machining centers adhere to strict international and domestic standards for geometric accuracy, positional accuracy, and working accuracy. For example, the ball screws and spindles of the VMC850 machining center have very high precision; even without a tool magazine, these machines are still classified as machining centers. CNC milling machines can be divided into table-type and bed-type. Table-type CNC milling machines mostly rely on manual speed changes for their spindles and can only meet general milling needs, adhering to the national standard for general-grade precision of CNC milling machines. Bed-type CNC milling machines are structurally similar to machining centers, with the spindle head moving up and down and continuously variable speed control. They adhere to the national standard for CNC milling machine precision levels. However, their machining accuracy still lags behind that of machining centers.

Furthermore, CNC milling machines only have three axes and are primarily used for planar machining. Machining centers, on the other hand, can operate on four or five axes simultaneously, enabling the machining of complex curved surfaces using multi-axis linkage technology. In terms of application, machining centers have a wider range of uses than CNC milling machines.
