01. A "Tool Magazine," and More, an "Intelligent Scheduler"
Machining centers can complete multiple processes in a single setup thanks to the tool magazine, their "ammunition depot." It stores various cutting tools such as milling cutters and drills, and its core task is to quickly and accurately deliver the correct tool to the spindle according to program instructions.
How important is tool changing efficiency? For example, in automotive parts manufacturing, a 5-second faster tool change can increase daily production by 20%; for precision parts, a tool changing error exceeding 5 micrometers (1/20th the thickness of a human hair) can render an entire batch unusable. Therefore, the essence of a tool magazine is an automated system combining "precision + speed."
02. Tool Changing: Four Steps to "Tool-to-Tool Transfer"
Taking the most common disc-type tool magazine as an example, tool changing is like a precise dance, proceeding in four steps:
Instruction Issuance: The CNC Calls "Tool Change"
When the machining program requires a tool change, the CNC system sends an instruction to the tool magazine: "Please send tool number T12!" The tool magazine's PLC controller immediately checks the "tool location map" to locate the target tool.
2. Tool Finding: High-Speed Tool Head "Returns to Position"
Tool magazine activation for tool finding: For disc-type tool magazines, a servo motor rotates the tool head, working in conjunction with a high-precision encoder to move the target tool to the "tool change position" (directly in front); for chain-type tool magazines, the chain carries the tool holder in a cyclical motion, precisely stopping at the designated position. The key is speed and stability—the positioning error must be less than 3 micrometers, otherwise the tool gripper will deviate.
3. Tool Gripping: Robotic Arm "Handshake" for Exchange
Dual-arm robotic arm synchronized movements: One arm releases the old tool from the spindle and returns it to the tool magazine; the other arm grips the new tool and retracts it to engage with the spindle. This tests three points: time synchronization (completed in 2-4 seconds), stable clamping force (neither breaking nor dropping the tool), and accurate posture (the tool holder and spindle interface fit perfectly, with an error <0.01mm).
4. Confirmation: System "Verifies Identity"
After tool changing, the tool magazine will detect: a contact sensor touching the tool holder groove, or a laser measuring the tool length and diameter, confirming that the tool is in place and of the correct type. An alarm will sound and the machine will stop if a problem occurs, preventing errors.
03. Our Tool Changing Technology: Stable, Intelligent, and Worry-Free
We understand that customers don't just want "tool changing capabilities," but rather "consistently reliable tool changing." Therefore, our tool magazine has three core advantages:
Stable Transmission: Ball screw + servo direct drive eliminates backlash, achieving a positioning accuracy of ±2μm, low vibration, and long lifespan;
Intelligent Tool Changing: AI learns and optimizes the motion curve, adjusting the speed according to the tool weight, becoming smoother with use;
Worry-Free Protection: Dustproof brush + sealing ring prevents metal shavings, dual sensors prevent failure, and emergency stop lock prevents collisions—suitable for high humidity and high dust conditions worldwide.
