How to carry out lubrication and maintenance for a lathe?

1. Lubrication of the Lathe

To ensure the lathe operates correctly and to minimize wear, all friction-prone components must be lubricated. This helps reduce unnecessary losses caused by friction. The primary methods for lubricating a lathe include:

(1) Manual Oiling (Pour-on Lubrication): This method is used for the external sliding surfaces of the lathe—such as the bed guideways, the guideways of the cross and compound slides, and the lead screws. After cleaning these surfaces, apply lubricant using an oil can.

(2) Splash Lubrication: Components located inside areas like the gearbox are lubricated by the motion of the gears, which splash lubricant throughout the housing. When adding new oil, ensure it passes through a filter screen; the oil level must not fall below the centerline of the oil sight glass. Oil should be changed every three months.

(3) Wick (Oil-rope) Lubrication: This method is used for bearings and gears located within the feed box. In addition to splash lubrication from the gears, lubricant is also supplied from an oil reservoir located at the top of the feed box.

(4) Ball-type Oil Cup Lubrication: This method is typically used for the tailstock, the cross and compound slides, and the bearings of rotating handles. To lubricate, press down the ball (check valve) in the oil cup and apply oil. These points should be lubricated at least once per shift.

(5) Grease Cup Lubrication: This method is generally used for components such as the intermediate gears in the change-gear box. To lubricate, fill the grease cup with grease; as the cap is screwed on, the grease is forced into the bearing housing. These cups should be refilled with grease once a week, and the cap should be turned one full rotation during each shift.

(6) Circulating Oil Pump Lubrication: This method relies on an internal oil pump, which provides a continuous and sufficient supply of lubricant to the necessary components. Since smooth rods and long lead screws operate at high speeds under poor lubrication conditions, they must be lubricated during every shift. The front bearings of these rods and screws, as well as the control levers, should be lubricated via their respective oil holes once per shift.

2. Level I Maintenance for Conventional Lathes

After a lathe has been in operation for 500 hours, it requires Level I maintenance. This maintenance is primarily carried out by the machine operator, with assistance from maintenance personnel. Before beginning, the power supply must be disconnected. Maintenance should then be performed according to the specified requirements and procedures, covering the following areas:

(1) External Maintenance: This involves a comprehensive cleaning of both the interior and exterior of the lathe. The machine must be free of rust and oil stains; all external surfaces and protective covers should be cleaned. Ensure that the lead screw, feed rod, and control levers are free of dust. Check for and replace any missing screws or handles, and clean the machine accessories.

(2) Spindle Gearbox: Clean the oil filter to ensure it is free of debris. Check the spindle nut for looseness and ensure all fastening screws are tightened. Adjust the clearance of the friction clutches and the tension of the braking mechanism.

(3) Carriage/Slide Assembly: Remove the tool post and adjust the clearance of the gibs for the cross-slide and compound rest. Clean and adjust the backlash in the lead screws and nuts of the cross-slide and compound rest.

(4) Change-Gear Box: Clean the gears and bushings, then apply fresh lubricant. Adjust the gear mesh clearance and check the bushings for any signs of play or looseness.

(5) Tailstock: Clean the tailstock, ensuring both its interior and exterior are free of dirt.

(6) Cooling and Lubrication System: Clean the coolant pump, oil filters, and coolant/oil trays. Remove any debris from the reservoir. Clean the oil wicks and felt pads, ensuring that all oil holes and passages are clear and unobstructed. Verify the quality of the lubricant, ensure all oil cups are in place, and confirm that the oil sight glasses are clean and transparent.
